Mary MacGregor's Torn Between Two Lovers...

I had forgotten all about this song until Alexis included it in a blog post...

I remember hearing this sappy ballad about having two lovers a lot back in the day.  I'm sure it was a hit because a lot of people can relate to being intensely attracted to two people at one time.  Mary MacGregor also has sort of a sweet, plaintive voice that lends itself well to the melodrama of this song from 1976.  I can't say I ever really loved "Torn Between Two Lovers", but I do remember it... like I remember a lot of things from the 70s, like processed cheese and canned chocolate pudding.

While searching for a video link to MacGregor's famous hit, I see that she also sang a rendition of the Godawful "I've Never Been To Me", a song made popular by Charlene in both 1977 and 1982.

People love this song, even though it's like aural Cheese Whiz...  MacGregor's version is kind of uptempo.  I think I might like it better than Charlene's.

I can see why Mary MacGregor sang "I've Never Been To Me".  It has a sound sort of similar to "Torn Between Two Lovers", kind of forlorn and wizened by making unfortunate choices.  Experience is a great teacher and even when you learn your lessons, other people may not be ready to learn from your mistakes.  Sometimes, people have to learn the hard way.  I think I prefer Mary MacGregor's version of this song if only because her style isn't as affected and contrived as Charlene's was.  Also, this version doesn't make me recall an unfortunate evening at a karaoke bar listening to someone murder it.

I understand Mary MacGregor enjoyed a music career in the 70s and 80s, though I think her one big hit was "Torn Between Two Lovers".  I might have to go searching for more of her music.
