The Wedding Song...

You know, I was never a big Peter, Paul, and Mary fan.  It's not because I didn't like what I'd heard by them, but because I just wasn't really exposed to much of their music.  Sure, I've heard "Leavin' On A Jet Plane" and "Puff The Magic Dragon" plenty of times... but I never bothered to explore deeper.  And I've also heard "The Wedding Song (There Is Love)" by Paul Stookey lots of times, but never really stopped to listen to it.  Until today, that is.  Today, "The Wedding Song" was a featured song on SingSnap.com.  So I went to YouTube to listen to it and determine if I wanted to try it myself.

Make no mistake about it.  This is an old fashioned love song written at a time when no one even imagined the day when there would be legal gay marriage.  The words are very traditional and a bit religious, since Stookey alludes to God.  The melody is beautiful and the sentiment is lovely.  I read that Stookey wrote this song for Peter Yarrow's wedding.  It was a wonderful gift to the couple and is now in the public domain for everyone to enjoy.  Anyway, I got a lot more comments on my version of "Vincent", which I also did today... but I think "The Wedding Song" turned out very nicely.

Incidentally, I love Don McLean and his song, "Vincent", which I also recorded today...

This one got a lot of nice comments.

A Norwegian guy who had a lot to say today attracted my attention.  It turns out he has a nice voice, so I did a duet with him.

There were other recordings today, but those were the better ones... Aside from "Baby, Now That I've Found You" by Alison Krauss.  I love singing her songs.

So I'm done now.  SingSnap is a fun time waster.  It beats watching 7th Heaven.

  1. They're all great. "The Wedding Song" is my favorite of the four but I love "Vincent"
almost equally. Jeez, Don McLean was dark.

Yep, "The Wedding Song " was written for Peter's wedding. He asked Paul to bless their union with a song, and Noel Paul says it came to him from out of nowhere.

Interestingly, anytime he performs it now, he sings it in first person as though God were speaking the words. (I don't like it as well that way.) He's still quite religious, but apparently a fun guy anyway. My dad knows them. He knew Mary less well than the other two, but said she was a classy chick as well.

They had a delightful blend. One somewhat odd song for thme to have sung was a Gilbert and Sullivan rendition of an aria from "The Yeoman and the Guard" called "I Have a Song to Sing, O." I know it from one of their children's CDs that we had around the house. (We used to perform it as a family when my brother and I were really little. He had to sing the melody along with mom, but I could hold my own part. people were always initially more impressed with him, like "Oh, look at that cute little boy. He's actually singing along with his mother" until midway through when it became apparent that I was providing the second harmony. We were competitive even as young children.)

There's a video of P. P. & M. singing it somewhere on youtube at a concert right outside the Sydney Opera House. Even with the lousy low-tech sound system, the blend is uncanny.

P.S. Husband's ex was the ultimate douche.

  2. Thanks for the comment, Alexis. Your dad has some great musical connections!

I love Don McLean's music, though I will admit I haven't heard as much of it as I should. I may have to listen to Peter, Paul, and Mary now.

I think anytime a boy sings and does reasonably well, people are more impressed. For some reason, it seems like there are a lot less boys who sing than girls. I guess they don't consider it a masculine thing to do. It's not until they get older that boys start to realize that having musical talent and training can be sexy.
