Anyway, his song "Heart and Soul" popped into my head the other day and I felt compelled to listen to it. I shared my impulse with friends on Facebook, and a fellow music nerd piped up with this groovy version done the by 70s era band, Exile.
This version of "Heart and Soul" was released in 1981, a few years before Huey Lewis made it famous.
Exile's version of "Heart and Soul" failed to crack the top 100. It topped out at 102. Then it was released by the BusBoys, who were best known for their hit song, "The Boys are Back in Town". I became aware of the BusBoys when I saw Eddie Murphy's first stand up film, Delirious.
They gave it kind of a funky, soul injected mood...
But although I like The BusBoys' version a little better than Exile's version, Huey Lewis clearly scores a homerun with his cover.
Wow... this really takes me back!
Unfortunately, Huey Lewis is suffering from Meniere's Disease and isn't touring anymore. It sounds like his condition is very debilitating. I hope he's feeling better soon. I always liked his infectious pop hits from the 80s. Listening to them makes me feel young. Those of you reading this who are rolling your eyes should know that time flies... and you'll be looking at and listening to the hits from your youth as wistfully as I am right now. I'm just glad I grew up when I did.
