Maxine Nightingale...

The other day, my mother in law was visiting and I turned on my "soulful" playlist.  It has a lot of songs she loves.  One of the songs that played was Maxine Nightingale's ethereal 70s hit, "Lead Me On"…

It's kind of a sweet love song that borders on whining.  Her voice is sweet and light and the lyrics are kind of heartbreaking because her man teases her.  This song was a hit in 1979 and every time I hear it, I am mysteriously transported back to the late 70s.  Of course, when I hear this, I think "crap from the past" for sure…

An earlier hit is "Right Back Where We Started From", which was a hit in 1976.  I think this was big on the disco circuit, though it doesn't seem like disco to me.  You can boogie to this number, while you wouldn't necessarily get down and funky with "Lead Me On".

I think Maxine was a two hit wonder.  Haven't heard anything from her in years… but she did have a brief shining fifteen minutes of fame.

Fish Heads...

Was watching The Amazing Race tonight and as the credits rolled, they played an updated version of the old song "Fish Heads" by Barnes and Barnes...  This song came out in 1979 and is very weird.



The song I remember doesn't start in the above clip until 2:23.  I like how one of the guys sounds like the Great Gonzo from The Muppet Show.  They used to play this song on Dr. Demento's show.

My husband didn't realize it was an actual song.  I had to educate him.  He thought it was just a kid's song or something.  Really?  Little kids singing about "Fish Heads"?  But then again, I sure did it with my friends back in the day.

Robert John...

I have always liked this song by Robert John, even though it's basically a song about a guy who was having a fling with another woman.  He breaks up with the other woman when his wife/significant other comes back into the picture.

I see by this video that Robert John's career might have been cut short by his rather average looks...

I liked this song because I liked the melody and John's mellow vocals... never really paid much attention to the lyrics until one day I played the karaoke version to see what it sounded like.  The words were pretty clear.  A guy is telling his girl on the side that they have to break up because his woman is coming home...  And that makes me think that both of the women could probably do better and neither of them should have "Sad Eyes" over a guy like him.

I will admit that I still like this song, though.  It's so 1979 I can't stand it.
