When You Believe...

I went through a brief Whitney Houston phase when I was a teenager.  I used to listen to her debut album all the time as I rode my bike to and from the barn where I boarded my horse.  As I got older and Whitney got flakier, I stopped listening to her music as much.  But even at the end of her life, I admired her voice.  Whitney Houston, in her prime, had a huge, pristine voice that came directly from her God given genetic makeup.

Some time ago, Whitney recorded a duet with Mariah Carey, another naturally gifted singer.  I never really went through a Mariah phase.  She was popular when I was in college and by that time, I had pretty much stopped listening to pop music.  I do like a few of Mariah Carey's songs, but generally I prefer Whitney's voice to hers, even as I recognize how beautiful her voice is.

I love both singers on "When You Believe".  They really made this a moving duet, even though their voices are breathy and a bit over-embellished.  I was listening to it this morning and feeling kind of inspired.  So that's why I'm blogging about it today.  This is a song that not many people could pull off the way Whitney and Mariah do.  It gives me goose bumps, tears in my eyes, and a huge lump in my throat.  I'm such a sap.

Today on SingSnap, there's a duet challenge.  You're supposed to sing a song with someone from another country.  I may do one with the Norwegian guy I ran into the other day, if he wants to join in.  If it turns out decently, I'll post it.

The many stylings of "I Will Always Love You..."

With all the talk about Whitney Houston this week, it may seem odd that I would bring up Linda Ronstadt...

But did you know that Linda also had a very successful cover of Dolly Parton's hit, "I Will Always Love You"?  I heard it for the first time this week and loved it...

I don't go to Linda Ronstadt for my politics, but man can that woman sing!  I love most of her music.  And I like what she did with Dolly's song.

When I hear Linda sing this, I hear her influencing Whitney's version on the chorus; while Dolly influenced the way Whitney did the verses.  Whitney sings the verses quietly and with emotion, then lets loose on the chorus the way Linda does.  Kevin Costner reportedly was familiar with Linda's version and brought it to David Foster to arrange for Whitney.  The end result was phenomenal...

And now even Glee is getting in on the act.  Sheesh!

Since everyone's talking about Whitney...

When I was a kid, I had Whitney Houston's self-titled album from 1985.  I used to ride my bike to the barn every day to see my horse.  A lot of times, I listened to Whitney on the way there through the headphones connected to my Walkman...  This was my favorite song from that album.

I used to listen to "Take Good Care Of My Heart" over and over again... even more than "The Greatest Love Of All" and "Saving All My Love For You".  I more or less lost interest in Whitney by 1987 or so, but her music was a big part of my teen years.  I'm sorry she left us so early and pray she's found peace.

I actually really liked her duets with Jermaine Jackson and she did several...

"If You Say My Eyes Are Beautiful"

"Nobody Loves Me Like You Do"

"Sweetest Sweetest"
