George Carlin once famously said, "That's my job, thinking up goofy shit..."
And here, he talks about goofy boy names...
This morning, a friend of mine introduced me to something totally goofy... Are you ready for Ethel Merman singing disco? That is some totally goofy shit!
Yes, it's true... Ethel Merman, who was once Ernest Borgnine's wife for about a month and reportedly divorced him because of his propensity for putting her in a "Dutch Oven", made a disco album back in the 1970s. She must have had quite a sense of humor. She was on Airplane! for God's sake...
But getting back to her disco album... Yeah, I'd like to know whose bright idea this was. Actually, I'm glad they did it, because it's very funny and weird.
It's almost as funny as Paris Hilton singing pop music...
I actually prefer the parody version of this song...
I'm in sort of a goofy mood today. I was writing a blog post about actors who sing and it led to someone passing on that revelation that Ethel Merman once went disco. That's about as inappropriate as Karen Carpenter going disco... which sadly, she did...
Holy shit... in this video, she fucking disco dances! The 70s were so strange!
But hell, even James Taylor did a little disco. Here's his cover of The Beatles' "Day Tripper". Hot mess.
At least he had the good sense not to dance.
Unlike "Ponch" (Erik Estrada) on CHiPs...
Unlike "Ponch" (Erik Estrada) on CHiPs...
I think I'm going to have to hang out on YouTube for awhile and see what other goofy shit I can dig up.
Some one should explain to Erik Estrada that they don't dance like that in California.
ReplyDeleteI think you'll like Leona Anderson.

That really qualifies as goofy shit! Thanks for pointing out this treasure to me... It's perfect for today.
ReplyDeleteThere was an episode of the A-team with Boy George which I've never quite got over.

That's a new one! And very goofy!
DeleteEthel merman doing disco is epic. It's similar to pat Boone doing heavy metal, except that Pat was merely pathetic. you couldn't even laugh at him, much less with him.
ReplyDeletei wonder what substance induced james taylor to cover "Day tripper." There are a lot of Beatles tunes I'd love to hear jT cover, including "Blackbird," "In My Life" "We Can Work It Out," "Hey Jude," "Let It Be," "TheLongand winding road," and about a thousand more; just no "Dy Tripper."
Karen Carpenter's disco video would have been more exciting, although maybe over budget, if it had been the various Osmond brothers with whom she was dancing. (Hell, even include the deaf brothers just for the sake of variety.) Karen actually had a bit of rhythm going for a skinny little white girl.
The parody version of Paris Hilton's video wasn't actually sung by her, was it? the singing sounded a lot better in the parody than in Paris' video. What Paris and some others in the same boat as she may not know is that there are things in this world that cannot be obtained with all the cash, credit, or material assets one can produce. One of those elusive things is talent.
I thought some of the songs Pat Boone did were okay... especially considering they were originally heavy metal. Ethel Merman gets props because her disco album is actually disco, whereas Pat's heavy metal album is actually big band style. On the other hand, I read that Ethel laid down the tracks before they were arranged into disco.
ReplyDeleteI think the Karen Carpenter video was something a fan made. They did a good job with it. The dancing segments must have come from one of the Carpenters' TV specials. It's pretty convincing, though.
Paris Hilton didn't sing the parody. I actually didn't Paris did that badly in her song, for someone who is obviously not a singer... But I still like the parody better.
I meant to add... I actually have a lovely rendition of James Taylor singing "Yesterday". I'll have to see if anyone made a video of it.
